Powered by the Wavetronix SmartSensor Matrix technology with railroad specific firmware, the system provides 100% redundant vehicle detection with none of the consequences of ground embedded loop detection. Viewing the crossing island from dedicated setback poles or atop the exit or entrance gate masts, this dual radar system provides detection confidence.
The USDOT Federal Rail Administration approved the Island Radar VDR24 Dual Radar Vehicle Detection system for four-quadrant gate crossing warning system exit gate control (under regulations of 49 CFR part 236, subpart H for approval of a product safety plan). Multiple railroads have demonstrated that the Island Radar system meets the highest standards of safety and performance required by the FRA. The Island Radar system is only the second product submitted to the FRA to receive this standard of approval.
The Island Radar system utilizes dual radar sensors each monitoring all detection zones. Both radars are connected to a VDR24 system controller that continually compares detection events reported by each device. This use of vitally circuited, dual radar sensors provides an increased system-level vitality that has successfully been proven through performance testing.
It is safe and easy to install two or more SmartSensor Matrix units above the crossing island and outside the roadway area. The sensors work together to provide fully redundant vehicle detection, and each unit continuously self-checks and crosschecks the other(s).
